Sock Backup

Sometimes it’s overlooking the smallest details that can turn an otherwise perfectly planned outing into a trip from hell. For example, you’ve planned a hike, but didn’t realize that it had rained the night before. Now the creek crossing that had previously been a rock hop has become a knee deep wade. Or image you’re snowshoeing. You’ve done 5km and have another 5km to go before your turn around point. But your toes are already starting to cold. How about an early season hike that has a lot of elevation gain. When you hiked it last year it was late in the season. But because you didn’t get out much over the winter, your feet have soften and you’re feeling a hot spot on the balls of your feet which is the tell tale sign of the beginnings of the dreaded blister.

While each of these potentially trip ending challenges could be dealt with in different ways, they could all be addressed with the same tool - a spare pair of socks. Spare socks don’t take up much room in a pack. They are great to switch into if your feet get wet. You can use them to layer up if your feet are cold. They can double as a liner to reduce the friction in your boot, which is the primary cause of blisters. Socks also have a number of non-feet related applications such mitts, a tourniquette, a pot holder, a bandanna or a bandage. Use your imagination. Remember, the best equipment to have in your pack are things that have multiple uses. So the next time you’re heading out, throw a spare pair in your pack. It just might save the day.
